Initial Results from DATTALION’s Joint Project with the International Renaissance Foundation

We are now a month into our joint project with the International Renaissance Foundation (IRF)*. The goal of this project is to increase access to DATTALION’s database, which provides images and eyewitness accounts of russia’s illegal war in Ukraine and their war crimes against humanity.

For September, the team met the following milestones:

  • We restructured the data collection team, which has allowed us to accelerate data collection and optimize the time required to update the public database with photo and video materials.
  • We streamlined internal team communication and refined our internal processes for tracking the search, uploading, and moderation of materials. Additionally, we enhanced coordination among team members through chat.
  • We introduced a new data collection topic named “Rehabilitation”, which encompasses the documentation of military and civilian rehabilitation efforts, as well as the welfare of animals. Files related to this topic will be marked with the “REHAB” token in their filenames.
  • In response to high demand, we have decided to include a “KIDS” marker on materials featuring children, as this has been a common request from external users of the database. This will greatly simplify the process of locating such materials.

For October, our team intends to fully implement the updated procedures and conduct related training for all team members.

We extend our gratitude to the Renaissance Foundation for providing us with this opportunity. We firmly believe that as a result of this project, our eyewitnesses’ portfolio will expand, our data collection methods will become more refined, and we will introduce a search tool for better usability of our database.
