russia destroys Nova Kahovka dam in Kherson
On June 6th, russia destroyed the Nova Kakhovka Dam in Kherson, Ukraine. The attack led to dangerous flooding across Kherson, with water over ten meters high recorded in multiple locations. Ukrainian officials stated that over 42,000 people were at risk from floodwaters. The attack has been widely labelled as a war crime as attacks against dams are prohibited by the Geneva Convention. There were also reports of russian shelling jeopardizing recovery efforts.
Wildlife in Kherson reel from effects of ecocide
russia’s destruction of the Nova Kahovka dam not only endangered and displaced Ukrainian civilians but also drowned and injured hundreds of thousands of animals and wildlife. At one zoo in Kherson Oblast, around 300 animals died because it was impossible to rescue them in time. The dam’s collapse is an act of ecological terrorism by russia as the floods have destroyed many acres of ecosystems which will take years to recover.
russia’s missile attack strikes Uman
russia launched a missile strike against the city of Uman which injured eight people. The locations of the strikes, a supermarket and a car wash among others, are the latest demonstration that russia intentionally targets civilian infrastructure.
Germany reconsidering its stance on supplying fighter jets to Ukraine
Germany has announced that it is reconsidering its position on the provision of fighter jets to Ukraine. In the past few months, German government officials, including German Chancellor Scholz, have insisted that modern military aircraft are off the table. However, on June 5th, German Defense Minister Pistorius announced that Germany is reconsidering its stance and will announce its decision in the next two weeks.
US announces new military aid package for Ukraine
On June 9th, The United States announced a new military aid package for Ukraine. This package is valued at over 2 billion USD and focused on replenishing Ukraine’s air defense assets. Some components of this round of military include artillery rounds and munitions for air defense systems.
