Tragedy Unleashed: Civilian Lives Lost in Kryvyi Rih and Odesa Strikes

On June 13th, a russian strike on Kryvyi Rih resulted in the deaths of 13 civilians. One of the locations hit was an apartment building. A day after this attack, russian strikes on Odesa resulted in the deaths of three food warehouse employees. In order to prevent civilians from these strikes, Ukraine needs more airpower and air defense systems.

russia Holds Illegal Trial of Ukrainian Azov Soldiers

In Rostov-on-Don, russia has begun an illegal trial against twenty-two Ukrainians who were either part of the Azov Brigade or who were affiliated with it during the battle of Mariupol.

Eight of the twenty-two Ukranians on trial are women who were employed as cooks for service members. The goal of the trial is to convict the Azov members anywhere from fifteen years to life in prison.

Greenpeace: Chemicals and Gasoline Contaminating Flooded Waters of Kakhovka Dam

Greenpeace has released an urgent report on the ecological disaster caused by russia’s destruction of the Kakhovka dam.

As a result of the Kakhovskaya HPP explosion, 32 objects with chemicals, oil, and gasoline were flooded – these are oil refineries, gas stations, thermal power plants, and various warehouses. At least 150 tons of engine oil leaked into the water in the first days of the disaster.

This pollution could lead to difficulties in the potable water supply to Ukrainian communities and wildlife.

Additional Military Aid for Ukraine En Route to Bolster Defense

This week has seen multiple pledges of new military aid from several of Ukraine’s allies.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a $500 million aid package, including air defense system munitions. The United States approved a $325 million aid package, including ammo, javelins, and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. Netherlands and Denmark will transfer artillery ammunition, while the UK and Italy have undisclosed aid packages.

Homecoming: Ukrainian Heroes Freed From Captivity

On June 11th, a prisoner swap freed 95 Ukrainian soldiers from captivity. The freed Ukrainians include members of the Border Guard, National Guard, and Armed Forces. Some of those included in the swap were involved in the fighting around Bakhmut while others have been in captivity much longer, having fought in the battles of Mariupol and Zmiinyi Island last year.

European Parliament Approves Ukraine’s NATO Membership Resolution

On June 15th, the European Parliament, with 425 positive votes, approved a resolution encouraging NATO countries to offer Ukraine membership into the alliance. The resolution stipulates that Ukraine should begin the process of accession as soon as the war ends.

While the resolution is not binding, it is significant because it shows that there is wide-scale international support amongst European governments for Ukraine to become a NATO member.
